Gentle OAE & Newborn Hearing Tests in Mumbai

Early detection is the key to your baby’s speech and cognitive development. We offer fast, completely painless Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) testing for infants and newborns across our 10+ Mumbai clinics and via comfortable home visits.

What is an Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) Test?

When a healthy inner ear (the cochlea) receives a sound, the tiny sensory hair cells inside it vibrate and send back a very faint echo. An Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) test uses a highly sensitive microphone to measure this echo.

Because the machine does all the measuring, the patient doesn’t need to answer questions or press buttons. This makes it the perfect gold-standard screening tool to determine if a newborn baby or infant has normal hearing function.

Why Newborn Hearing Screening is Critical

The first six months of a baby’s life are vital for speech and language development. We highly recommend scheduling an OAE test if:

  • Your baby missed their initial newborn hearing screening at the hospital.
  • Your baby received a “Refer” (fail) on their hospital screening and needs a follow-up.
  • Your baby spent time in the NICU, was born prematurely, or had high jaundice (bilirubin) levels.
  • There is a family history of childhood hearing loss.
  • You have noticed your infant does not startle at loud noises or turn toward familiar voices.

Stress-Free Baby Hearing Tests in Your Nursery

Taking a newborn out in Mumbai’s unpredictable weather, dealing with traffic, and sitting in clinical waiting rooms can be stressful for both the baby and the parents. Crystal Hearing Solutions offers specialized At-Home Pediatric Testing.

Our expert audiologists bring portable, clinical-grade OAE equipment directly to your home. We can conduct the screening while your baby is resting in their crib or even while they are nursing. It provides unparalleled peace of mind without the commute.

What to Expect: A Fast, Painless Screening

We handle your little ones with the utmost care. The OAE test is entirely non-invasive and usually takes just a few minutes

Step 1: The Setup.

The best time to do an OAE test is when the baby is deeply asleep or very quiet.

Step 2: The Probe.

We gently place a tiny, soft rubber earphone just inside the baby’s outer ear canal.

Step 3: The Tones.

The equipment plays a series of soft clicking sounds or tones into the ear.

Step 4: The Measurement.

The microphone instantly measures the “echo” from the inner ear. We will immediately let you know if the baby gets a “Pass” (normal outer/inner ear function) or a “Refer” (needs further evaluation).

Clinics where we offer OAE & Newborn Hearing tests in Mumbai

Will the OAE test hurt my baby or wake them up?

Not at all. The test is 100% painless and uses very soft sounds. In fact, most babies sleep right through the entire process!

What happens if my baby gets a “Refer” (fail) result?

Try not to panic. A “Refer” doesn’t automatically mean your baby is permanently hearing impaired. It can often be caused by temporary fluid in the ear canal, vernix, or crying during the test. We will usually recommend a follow-up OAE or a more detailed BERA / ABR test to get a clearer picture.

How long does the OAE test take?

If the baby is quiet and sleeping, the actual test takes less than 2 minutes per ear.

Is the OAE test only for babies?

While it is the standard for newborn screening, we also use OAE testing for adults! It is a great diagnostic tool for adults who cannot respond reliably to a standard hearing test, or to check for inner ear damage caused by certain medications or loud noise exposure.
