Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA Test) in Mumbai

Get crystal-clear insights into your hearing health with a PTA test. With 21 years of experience and 11 clinics across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, our expert audiologists provide accurate, painless hearing tests to help you reconnect with the sounds you love.

What is a Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) Test?

Pure Tone Audiometry, the PTA test, is the gold standard for testing hearing sensitivity. To put it simply, it helps us map out exactly what you can and cannot hear. During the evaluation, we play sounds at various pitches (frequencies) and volumes through specialized headphones. Your responses help us create an “audiogram”, a personalized visual map of your hearing health. This allows us to pinpoint whether you have a hearing loss, what type it is, and exactly how to treat it.

Signs It’s Time for a Hearing Evaluation

Hearing loss often happens so gradually that you might not notice it right away. We recommend booking a test if you or a loved one are experiencing:

  • Frequently asking people to repeat themselves.
  • Needing to turn the TV or radio volume up higher than others.
  • Struggling to follow conversations in noisy environments, like crowded Mumbai restaurants or family gatherings.
  • A persistent ringing or buzzing sound in your ears (tinnitus).
  • Feeling exhausted after social events due to the strain of listening.

What to Expect During Your Hearing Assessment

As a certified audiology clinic trusted by tens of thousands of families, we ensure your visit is comfortable, transparent, and completely painless.

Step 1: Case History.

We start by sitting down with you to understand your lifestyle, medical history, and specific hearing challenges.

Step 2: Ear Examination (Otoscopy).

We gently inspect your ear canal to ensure there is no wax blockage or infection affecting your hearing.

Step 3: The PTA Test.

You will sit comfortably in our sound-treated room. You’ll wear headphones and simply press a button or raise your hand every time you hear a beep, even if it’s very faint.

Step 4: Review & Solutions.

We immediately review your audiogram with you in plain language. If you require hearing aids, we guide you through the world’s best brands like Signia, Phonak, ReSound and Widex.

Your PTA Test Results: Reading the Audiogram

Your audiogram is a chart of the softest sound you can hear at each pitch. Pitch runs from low on the left to high on the right, and loudness from soft at the top to loud at the bottom, in decibels (dB HL). Each ear is marked separately. The lower your marks sit on the chart, the louder a sound must be before you hear it.

What Is a Normal Audiometry Result?

On the World Health Organization’s scale, hearing is normal when your better ear’s hearing level is below 20 dB HL. Hearing loss is mild from 20 to 34 dB, moderate from 35 to 49 dB, moderately severe from 50 to 64 dB, severe from 65 to 79 dB, profound from 80 to 94 dB and complete at 95 dB or more. Your audiologist explains your own result in plain language at the same visit. Read more about the degrees of hearing loss.

What Are the Types of Audiometry?

Pure tone audiometry is one of several hearing tests. Your audiologist chooses the ones you need:

  • Pure tone audiometry (PTA) finds the softest tone you hear at each pitch, in each ear.
  • Speech audiometry checks how clearly you hear and understand words.
  • Impedance audiometry checks how your eardrum and middle ear move.
  • Play audiometry turns the hearing test into a game for young children.
  • Free field and aided audiometry tests your hearing through speakers, with and without hearing aids.
  • BERA and ABR measure how your hearing nerve responds to sound, with no reply needed from you, so they suit babies and anyone who cannot respond.
  • The OAE test checks the faint sounds a healthy inner ear makes, and is used to screen newborns.
