What is Free Field and Aided Audiometry?
Most standard hearing tests require you to wear snug headphones. But what if we need to test how well you hear with your hearing aids on? Or what if a toddler simply refuses to wear headphones? That is where Free Field Audiometry comes in. Instead of headphones, calibrated sounds (beeps, warbles, or speech) are played through high-fidelity speakers positioned around you in our sound-treated room. When we perform this test while you are wearing your hearing aids or cochlear implants, it is called Aided Audiometry. It is the ultimate test to prove whether your devices are actually doing their job.

Step 1: The Setup.
You (or your child) will sit comfortably in a chair in the center of our sound-treated room, positioned precisely between calibrated speakers. No heavy headphones required!
Step 2: The Sounds.
We will play a series of tones, warbles, or speech clips through the speakers at varying volumes and frequencies.
Step 3: The Response.
Adults will simply press a button or raise a hand. For infants and toddlers, our expert audiologists carefully observe behavioral responses, like a head turn or widening eyes.
Step 4: Immediate Fine-Tuning.
We compare your “aided” results to your “unaided” hearing loss. If there are gaps in clarity, we immediately reprogram your Signia, Phonak, ReSound or Widex hearing aids to fix the issue.
