What Is Real Ear Measurement?
Real Ear Measurement, also called probe-microphone verification, measures the sound your hearing aid actually delivers inside your ear canal. A tiny, soft probe microphone sits in your ear canal, close to the eardrum, while you wear your hearing aid.
No two ear canals are the same. The same hearing aid, at the same settings, delivers a different level of sound in your ear than in anyone else’s. REM measures yours, so your audiologist can fine-tune the hearing aid until the sound reaching your eardrum matches what your hearing test calls for.

What Happens in a Real Ear Measurement Test
The test is comfortable and painless.
Step 1: Ear check and hearing test review.
We examine your ear canals and review, or update, your hearing test, so the targets for your hearing are current.
Step 2: Probe placement.
A thin, soft probe tube rests in your ear canal beside your hearing aid. You will barely feel it.
Step 3: Live measurement.
We play speech at soft, average and loud levels and see on screen what your hearing aid delivers to your eardrum, against the targets for your hearing.
Step 4: Fine-tune and measure again.
Your RCI-certified audiologist adjusts the hearing aid and measures again, until the sound reaching your eardrum matches your hearing test.
