Real Ear Measurement (REM) in Mumbai

The gold standard for hearing aid fitting. We don’t guess what your hearing aid is doing inside your ear. We measure it.

Quick Answer

Real Ear Measurement (REM) is a painless test that uses a tiny probe microphone inside your ear canal to measure the exact sound your hearing aid delivers to your eardrum, so it can be fine-tuned to match your prescription precisely.

What is Real Ear Measurement?

Real Ear Measurement (also called probe-microphone verification) is the scientific way to confirm that your hearing aid is delivering exactly the sound your hearing loss requires.

Here is the problem it solves: no two ear canals are the same. The same hearing aid, at the same settings, produces a different level of sound in your ear than it does in anyone else’s. That is why a hearing aid programmed only through the manufacturer’s software can sound “fine” on the computer screen while quietly under-performing inside your ear.

During REM, our audiologist places a tiny, soft probe microphone inside your ear canal, close to the eardrum, while you wear your hearing aid. We then play calibrated speech signals and measure, in real time, precisely what the hearing aid is delivering to your ear. If the measured sound does not match your prescription, we fine-tune the device until it does. No guesswork. No assumptions. Verified clarity.

Signs Your Hearing Aid Was Never Properly Verified

Most hearing aids in India are fitted using only the manufacturer’s automatic “first fit”, which research consistently shows misses the prescribed targets for a majority of wearers. We recommend a REM verification if:

  • Your hearing aid “works”, but voices still sound muffled or unclear.
  • You hear people speaking but struggle to understand the words, especially in noise.
  • Your own voice sounds hollow, boomy, or like you are speaking in a barrel.
  • You paid for a premium device but feel it performs like a basic amplifier.
  • Your hearing aid has never been checked with a probe microphone in your ear.
  • You bought your hearing aids online or from another supplier and were never called back for verification.

Why a “Computer Fit” Isn’t Enough

When a hearing aid is programmed from software alone, the computer estimates how sound will behave in an average ear canal. But your ear canal’s exact length, width, and shape change how sound builds up at the eardrum, especially in the high frequencies where speech clarity lives.

REM replaces that estimate with a direct measurement from inside your own ear. It is painless, takes only a few minutes per ear, and is recommended by every major audiology body worldwide as the benchmark of a professional fitting. It is also one of the clearest differences between buying a hearing aid and being properly fitted with one.

What to Expect During Your REM Appointment

The entire process is comfortable, non-invasive, and completely painless.

  1. Ear Check & Audiogram Review. We examine your ear canals and review (or update) your hearing test so your prescription targets are current and accurate.
  2. Probe Placement. A thin, soft probe tube rests gently in your ear canal alongside your hearing aid. You will barely feel it.
  3. Live Measurement. We play calibrated speech at soft, average, and loud levels and watch, on screen, exactly what your hearing aid delivers to your eardrum compared against your prescribed targets.
  4. Fine-Tune & Re-Verify. Our RCI-certified audiologist adjusts your hearing aid and measures again, until the sound reaching your eardrum matches your prescription. You leave with proof, not promises.

Already Own Hearing Aids? Bring Them In.

You do not need to have purchased your hearing aids from us. We verify and fine-tune devices from all major global brands, including Signia, Phonak, ReSound, and Widex. Real Ear Measurement FAQs

Is Real Ear Measurement painful?

Not at all. A soft, flexible probe tube about the thickness of a thin noodle rests in your ear canal for a few minutes. Most patients say they barely notice it.

How long does a REM appointment take?

The measurement itself takes a few minutes per ear. We allocate 30 to 45 minutes for the full appointment so we can examine your ears, verify both devices, fine-tune, and re-verify.

I bought my hearing aids somewhere else. Can you still do REM on them?

Yes. As long as they are from a major brand such as Signia, Phonak, ReSound, or Widex, our audiologists can verify and reprogram them to match your current hearing prescription.

How often should REM be repeated?

At every new fitting, after any significant reprogramming, and ideally at your annual hearing review, because your hearing and your ear canal can both change over time.

Is REM suitable for children?

Yes, and it is especially important for children, who often cannot describe what they are hearing. REM lets us objectively confirm a child’s hearing aids are delivering the right sound for speech and language development.

What does REM cost?
