Hearing Aid Technology & Buying Advice

AI, Bluetooth, rechargeable, invisible — straight talk on what each technology actually does and which brand fits your life.

Why shouldn’t I buy a cheap hearing aid online? #

Those cheap devices sold on e-commerce sites are usually PSAPs (Personal Sound Amplification Products). They act like a megaphone, making every sound louder — including the background noise you hate. A true hearing aid is a Class 1 medical device. RCI-certified audiologists program its microchip using your exact audiogram, amplifying only the specific frequencies you have lost, while actively suppressing background noise. Using a cheap amplifier can actually cause further damage to your hearing over time.

How do AI hearing aids work? #

Standard hearing aids amplify sound, but AI hearing aids actually understand your environment. Devices equipped with AI scan your surroundings up to 1,000 times a second. They can instantly distinguish between human speech and background noise (an AC unit, traffic, restaurant chatter). In a noisy restaurant, the AI will automatically turn down the background noise and focus its directional microphones entirely on the voice of the person sitting in front of you.

Are invisible hearing aids right for me? #

Invisible-in-Canal (IIC) and Completely-in-Canal (CIC) hearing aids are custom-moulded to sit deep inside your ear, making them undetectable. To qualify for one, you need two things:

  1. An ear canal wide enough to hold the electronic components.
  2. Mild to moderate hearing loss.

If your hearing loss is severe to profound, an invisible device simply cannot hold a speaker large enough to give you the power you need.

Should I get rechargeable hearing aids? #

If you have arthritis, vision issues, or just hate buying batteries, rechargeable hearing aids are a game-changer. Using the same Lithium-Ion technology found in your smartphone, you simply place the hearing aids in their dock at night. By morning, they have 24+ hours of continuous power — even if you’re streaming Bluetooth audio. No more dead batteries in the middle of a meeting or family dinner.

How do Bluetooth hearing aids work? #

Modern hearing aids connect directly to your iPhone or Android device via Bluetooth. When someone calls you, the ringtone plays directly inside your ears. You can answer the call by simply tapping your hearing aid, and stream the caller’s voice in perfect, prescriptive stereo sound. You can also stream music, podcasts, and video audio directly into your ears, completely hands-free.

Should I buy Signia or Phonak hearing aids? #

Both are elite brands, but your lifestyle dictates the winner. Phonak (Lumity and Infinio platforms) is famous for its universal Bluetooth connectivity — it connects seamlessly to almost any Bluetooth device, not just modern smartphones. Signia (IX platform) is famous for “Own Voice Processing” (making your own voice sound natural) and its ultra-sleek, stylish designs like the Styletto.

What is a Telecoil (T-Coil) in a hearing aid? #

A telecoil is a tiny copper wire coiled inside some hearing aids. Many public spaces — cinemas, airports, banks, and places of worship — have induction loops installed in the room. When you switch your hearing aid to the “T” setting, the telecoil acts as a wireless antenna, streaming the room’s PA system or movie audio directly into your hearing aids, bypassing the background noise entirely.
